Recruit school can teach a firefighter how to perform the job. Becoming a professional is bigger than that. It happens in the firehouse, in the examples people set, in the standards they tolerate, and in the expectations they pass to the next person through the door.

From Probation to Professional examines firefighter identity, culture, standards, accountability, leadership, and the unwritten lessons that shape a career. It is not an argument that the fire service was better in the past. It is an argument that progress should not require us to forget what matters.

Probie to Pro is a place to think about how firefighters become professionals and how the fire service can move forward without losing its identity along the way.

Why Probie to Pro?

Every generation inherits something from the one before it. Some of that inheritance is written down. Much of it is not. The culture of a firehouse, the standards of a crew, the way a senior firefighter treats a new member, and the moral expectations of the profession are all passed along through people.

Where I fit into it.

I'm Tyler Whittredge, a firefighter, paramedic, instructor, writer, and speaker. Most of my work starts with a simple question: What are we teaching the next generation, whether we mean to or not?
